Montenegro’s Adriatic coast could be a film set, with emerald sea and Venetian
walled towns. Lord Byron, who visited this part of the Balkans in the early
19th century, claimed it was “the most beautiful encounter between land and
sea”. The “Balkan Riviera” was popular with Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren
and Marilyn Monroe in the Fifties. They stayed on the island of Sveti
Stefan, looking back at the dark, brooding mountains that give this small
country its name.
